maRea Cruises in Stavros, on the edge of the Strymonikos Gulf, is a small local boat company created to offer calm, thoughtful day trips shaped by the sea, the coast and real Greek hospitality.
We are based in Stavros near Thessaloniki, and our trips move through a part of northern Greece we know properly, not from a brochure but from years on the water and on these shores. The idea is simple. Give people time to breathe, swim, look around, celebrate a little, and feel the place as it realy is.
111111111111Why the name maRea
The name maRea carries the meaning we wanted from the start. It brings to mind the tides, the rhythmic rise and fall of water under the pull of the Moon, and the way life itself moves through change, rest, return and renewal. For us, it also echoes Rhea from ancient Greek tradition, not as a strict linguistic claim, but as a creative association with flow, transformation, creation and regeneration.
That is the spirit behind the company. Not noise, not rush, not a checklist day out. A softer pace, with room for the sea to do its work on people a bit.
From Thessaloniki to Stavros
maRea Cruises was created by Maro Vedava and Captain Argy, a couple from Thessaloniki who chose to leave the city and live closer to nature and the sea. Stavros made sense for us. It sits at a practical and beautiful meeting point, with easy road access from Thessaloniki, and with direct reach into the wider Strymonikos Gulf and the coast towards Olympiada and Ancient Stageira.
If you are coming from Thessaloniki, the drive usually takes about an hour and a half depending on traffic and season. In summer the roads are busiest on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so it helps to leave a little earier. Stavros is also a familiar base for people staying around Asprovalta, Vrasna and the wider bay.
Short founder timeline
- Thessaloniki years – city life, creative work, seafaring work, and a growing wish to build something more personal
- Move towards Stavros – a choice to live nearer the coast, the landscape and a slower daily rhythm
- maRea Cruises begins – a small local company shaped by art, seamanship and genuine hosting
- Today – trips in the Strymonikos area with a focus on care, character and local knowledge
Maro and creativity
Maro is a multimedia artist, and that matters to the way maRea feels. Not in a staged way. More in the sense of attention. Attention to atmosphere, to detail, to colour, to how a journey unfolds from the first welcome to the last look back at the coast. The company was not built as a transport service with music added on top. It was built as an experience with shape, mood and meaning.
Her creative background helps turn a simple boat day into something warmer and more memorable. A swim stop is not just a swim stop. A sunset is not just a photo moment. The whole thing should feel balanced, relaxed and honest, wich is harder to do than it sounds.
Captain Argy and the sea
Captain Argy is an experienced Merchant Marine master mariner with childhood knowledge of Strymonikos and years of professional seamanship worldwide. That combination is important. One part is local instinct. The other is discipline, judgement and proper respect for the sea. Guests may not always notice that in obvious ways, but they feel it in how the day runs.
In this area, conditions can change through the day. Summer mornings are often calmer. By afternoon, local winds can freshen, especially when heat builds inland. Water clarity is often lovely on settled days, especially away from busy shore spots, though after stronger winds the sea can turn a bit milky near the coast. Knowing when to move, where to anchor more comfortably, and when to keep things simple is part of real captaining, not showmanship.
For general weather and marine conditions, it is always wise to check official sources such as the Hellenic National Meteorological Service.
Why a traditional wooden boat
We chose a traditional wooden boat because it suits the area and the kind of day we want to offer. Wood has presence. It sits gently in the landscape. It belongs to the long story of Greek coastal life. And for many guests, stepping aboard a boat like Maroula changes the mood straight away. You slow down without trying.
There is also something practical in it. A traditional boat invites conversation, shared space and easy moments between swimming, sailing and looking at the coast. It feels human-sized. That matters to us. You can read more about the boat itself on the Maroula page.
111111111111Experiences we want guests to have
We do not try to cram the day with too much. The point is to leave space for the things people remember.
- Relaxation without fuss
- Swimming in clean water when conditions allow
- Views of the coast from the right angle, which is often from the sea
- Connection with local history around places such as Ancient Stageira
- Small celebrations with family or friends
- A sense of the landscape around Stavros, Olympiada and the wider gulf
Some guests want a calm morning out. Some want a sunset with a glass in hand. Some are planning a birthday, a family gathering or a private day afloat. That is why we keep clear options like Morning Escape, Sunset Delight and Private Cruises.
Our relationship with Strymonikos
The Strymonikos Gulf is not just a backdrop for us. It is the centre of the whole idea. This is a broad bay in northern Greece between Chalkidiki and the mainland coast east of Thessaloniki, with beaches, fishing grounds, changing light and a long lived history. Around Stavros and Olympiada, the sea is tied closely to everyday life, not only to tourism.
Nearby, Kafkanas and the archaeological area of Ancient Stageira give the coast extra depth for people who enjoy landscape with a story behind it. If you want to understand the wider area before or after your cruise, the official Visit Greece website and the Stageira reference page are useful starting points. We also share local context on our Explore Strymonikos page.
Responsible, personal hospitality
Small local operators earn trust in a different way. Not by claiming to be the biggest, but by being present, careful and consistent. We keep things personal because that is the only way we want to work. You are not stepping into an anonymous queue. You are joining a day hosted by people who live here and care how it feels.
That includes respect for weather, for the sea, for local communities and for the places where people swim and anchor. If this matters to you too, have a look at our Responsible Sea Tourism page. For diving and sea activity context in the region, you can also visit portoscuba.com.

Meet Maroula
Maroula is the boat that carries this whole idea into real life. She is not an accessory to the brand. She is part of it. Traditional, welcoming and full of character, she suits the pace and scale of the cruises we believe in. Families, couples, small groups and older travellers often appreciate that the atmosphere feels relaxed rather than hectic.
If you want the proper details, photos and practical information, go to Meet Maroula. And if you would like to know more about the skipper behind the wheel, the Captain Argy page gives that picture without the fluff.
