A relaxed week around the Strymonikos coast
If you are basing yourselves in Asprovalta or Vrasna for a week, this plan gives you more than long beach hours and taverna dinners. It is built for real holiday pace around Stavros, Olympiada and Ancient Stageira, with room for swims, naps, short drives and one very good boat day from the harbour.
111111111111I have watched this coastline since I was a boy and later from a captain’s bridge as well, so I know how quickly the light, wind and sea can change here. In summer, the mornings are usualy your best friend. By mid-afternoon the heat can flatten the day a bit, and on some days the breeze along the open coast picks up enough to make a boat plan better in the morning than late on.
Seven days at a glance
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Optional evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Settle into Asprovalta or Vrasna beach | Slow promenade walk and local shopping | Sunset by the seafront in Nea Vrasna |
| 2 | Stavros harbour and village | Beach rest or short hill viewpoint drive | Waterfront dinner in Stavros |
| 3 | Morning wooden-boat cruise from Stavros | Rest time back at base | Easy stroll only |
| 4 | Olympiada and Ancient Stageira | Swim and lunch by the sea | Quiet return drive |
| 5 | Nature day around the wider Strymonikos area | Long beach break | Optional sunset cruise instead of Day 3 |
| 6 | Choose your favourite beach stretch again | Hidden coves or family time | Ice cream and promenade |
| 7 | Short local market errand and final swim | Lunch, packing, one last coffee | Harbour walk in Stavros |
Day 1: Arrive and let the coast set the pace
Asprovalta, Nea Vrasna and Vrasna Beach sit on the northern side of the Strymonikos Gulf, east of Thessaloniki. From Thessaloniki by car, the drive is usually about 80 to 90 km depending on exactly where you stay and which road you take. Keep the first day light. Unpack, get your bearings, and walk the long beachfront where forested slopes sit behind the plain and the sea opens wide in front.
Afternoon is for a first proper swim. These beaches are easy for road-travelling families because access is simple and the shore is broad, but in peak summer they can get busy, especaily near central access points. If you arrive on a windy day, the water may lose that glassy look for a while, so save your best swim expectations for early next morning.
Day 2: Stavros without rushing it
Stavros is roughly 20 km east of Asprovalta, usually about a 25 to 30 minute drive. Start at the harbour and old part of town, then take your time along the waterfront. Captain Argy often says Stavros rewards people who do less, not more. Sit for coffee, watch the fishing boats and notice how the mountain comes almost down to the sea here.
Later, choose between beach time or a short scenic drive above town for wider views over the gulf. In the evening, Stavros gets lovely colour over the water, a softer gold then pink on clear days. It sounds simple because it is. That is the point, realy.
Day 3: Your boat morning, then a lazy afternoon
This is the day to reserve early and protect in the diary. The four-hour Morning Escape from Stavros works well in this itinerary because the sea is often calmer earlier in the day. It heads towards Kafkanas and the coast near Ancient Stageira aboard a traditional wooden boat, giving you a different view of the land, the coves and the changing water colour.
Read the route pages for Morning Escape, Ancient Stageira and Kafkanas before you go, then leave the rest of the day free. After a morning at sea, most people want shade, a shower and maybe a late lunch. Trying to add a museum or long drive here is where holiday plans start to feel too tight.
111111111111Day 4: Olympiada and Ancient Stageira together
Olympiada lies east of Stavros on the road that follows the coast towards the Athos side, usually around 35 km from Asprovalta and about 18 km from Stavros. It is one of the nicest day trips in the area because you can combine sea, village atmosphere and history without spending all day in the car. The archaeological site of Ancient Stageira, associated with Aristotle’s birthplace, is just outside the village. Check current visitor information with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture before going.
Spend the morning at the site while it is cooler, then move down to Olympiada for a swim and lunch. The water here can be very clear on settled days, and the setting is softer and greener than many visitors expect. If you want wider context for the region, the official municipality pages for Volvi and Aristotle Municipality are useful for practical updates and local information.

Day 5: Keep one flexible day for weather, energy and mood
This is where good itineraries become useful instead of bossy. If Day 3 had perfect sea conditions, use today for a nature-focused drive, a second visit to your favourite beach, or a gentle wander with ideas from the Strymonikos Travel Guide and Hidden Beaches & Attractions. If Day 3 was too windy or did not suit your timing, shift the boat plan here.
The optional alternative is the 2.5-hour Sunset Delight from Stavros, passing the Asprovalta and Vrasna coast. I like this one for couples and small groups who want evening colour and a softer rhythm at sea. It should stay optional, not compulsory, because sunset trips depend more on your energy after a hot day and on whether the evening breeze behaves itself.
111111111111Day 6: A second look is often the best one
By now you will know which stretch suits you best. Families often return to the easier organised sections near where they stay. Couples may prefer driving a little and choosing a quieter patch of coast. This is also a good day to revisit Stavros or Olympiada with no checklist at all, just a swim, a coffee and a bit of wandering.
If the weather turns mixed, swap beach hours for a longer lunch and short local drives. Around this gulf, conditions can change from one bay to the next, so do not assume the whole coast is the same. A breezy Asprovalta morning can still leave a calmer pocket farther east, though not always, of course.
Day 7: Last swim, no pressure
Leave the final day mostly open. Have one last morning swim before the sand gets hot, pick up local bits for the road, and stop in Stavros or Nea Vrasna on the way if that suits your route. If you are heading back to Thessaloniki, check traffic and weather first through the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, especially in high summer weekends.
People often remember the final harbour walk more than the busiest day. The smell of pine, the boats rocking lightly, children still dripping from a late swim, that sort of thing stays with you.
Who this week suits best
- Families wanting easy beach access with a couple of proper outings
- Couples who like sea views, village stops and one memorable cruise
- Older travellers who prefer short drives and rest built into the day
- Nature lovers interested in coast, hills and changing light
Rainy or windy weather swaps
- Move archaeological visits to the morning and beach time to the clearest part of the day
- Keep the cruise day flexible until conditions look right
- Use Stavros and Olympiada for shorter walks, coffee stops and sea views even when swimming is off
- Avoid overcommitting to exposed beaches when the wind is already up from midday
Transport, booking ahead and not overplanning
A car is the easiest way to do this week properly. Public transport exists in the wider area, but for families and couples trying to combine beaches, Stageira and Stavros harbour days, driving is much simpler. Parking is usually easiest in the morning and harder close to the seafront in peak August.
Book the preferred cruise day ahead, then leave the rest loose. That is the best balance here. One fixed sea experience, a couple of anchor outings, and enough empty space for heat, naps, meltdowns, traffic or a beach that suddenly looks too good to leave. That is how locals do it when we want the week to feel good, not just full.
